Fifteen years ago, I was deeply immersed in a lifestyle of fitness, running marathons and participating in triathlons nearly every weekend. Rain or shine, I'd log several miles on the coldest and hottest days of the year without hesitation. However, last week, I found myself undergoing minor surgery, and suddenly, I had to adjust to a slower pace.

Even before the surgery, I walked with a limp, but now, with both feet affected, my gait feels even more strained. I used to joke that I walked like a centenarian, but post-surgery, it feels more like two centuries old. Despite these challenges, I found solace in small victories, like successfully completing my daily walk around the block.

Yet, amidst my efforts to maintain patience and adopt a philosophical outlook on my recovery, I couldn't shake the urge to compare myself to my former self. As Dr. Matthew Gelbert wisely advised, I need to stop measuring myself against my younger, more agile self – she's a different person now.

Each morning, I'm thrilled by the progress I make during my walk, yet I still find myself frustrated by my inability to move as swiftly as I once did. It's easy to get caught up in the pace of things, but as Chris Pine aptly stated, perspective is key. While I may not have control over my situation, I can choose how I perceive it.

Moving forward, I'll strive to view my circumstances through a more positive lens, appreciating the beauty of my healing process and recognizing the privilege of living this life. After all, as I continue to heal, my journey is uniquely mine – and that's something to celebrate.
