I
've never had the opportunity to encounter an accurate job description. Typically, job descriptions intentionally remain ambiguous, and I'm confident that the ones I've been involved in creating were no exception. The roles for Buswell Biomedical are formed around what is needed. These roles are specifically defined by the desired outcome, leaving no room for ambiguity. Furthermore, I have personally selected the most suitable candidates based on merit, disregarding any preconceived notions of their appearance, but I am aware as the company grows this will be difficult to maintain.
I was dismissed from a engineering job. During my dismissal, the reason cited was my tendency to make numerous mistakes. I cannot deny this accusation, but I would like to emphasize the following: I familiarized myself with our quality control system and drafted a comprehensive test plan for the Occipital Cervical Thoracic (OCT) spinal system that I designed. Without guidance, I sent the entire plan to the Quality VP at the time, seeking her feedback on its sufficiency. Regrettably, she not only failed to respond to my email but also used the information I shared as ammunition during the quality review meeting. However, this experience taught me a valuable lesson: empowered individuals empower others. It was disappointing to witness an empowered woman betray my trust by exploiting a simple query. Nevertheless, upon reflection, I recognize the significance of this lesson. I firmly believe that valuable ideas and competency hold inherent worth. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that not everyone will support you, as some women and veterans have attempted to exploit me in the past due to the prevailing culture. This repeated experience has reinforced the adage that "people are people." I possess both strengths and weaknesses, and my actions reflect accordingly. It is unwise to assume that people will assist you, but it is crucial to express gratitude when they do.
Aligning Culture with Strategy
To develop an innovative strategy, it is imperative that culture embraces current ideas and is free from toxicity. Company cultures should remain up-to-date and prioritize inclusivity to foster a diverse pool of ideas. Not only should individuals be encouraged to bring their authentic selves to work, but the company should actively promote this through rules and outcomes. Authenticity should never be a source of fear, as it only breeds impostor syndrome. By eliminating the need for individuals to expend mental energy pretending to be someone they're not, we create an environment that nurtures innovation and minimizes self-doubt.
Terminate the employment of individuals who fail to align with the company culture. In the past, employees were "let go" based on vague assumptions about what a professional should look like. When bad employees remain unaddressed, it discourages good employees from staying, ultimately leading them to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Key Aspects of an Ideal Culture:
Employees who consistently achieve positive outcomes should be recognized and promoted, irrespective of subjective perceptions.
Employees who consistently perform poorly and exhibit inappropriate behavior should be dismissed in the best interest of the company.
These are my thoughts on company culture.
