Reflecting on Money Matters: A Lesson Learned at Buswell Biomedical

This past week was a whirlwind for Buswell Biomedical as we finally picked up the prototype parts from machining and welding. With assembly now on the horizon, it's hard to contain my excitement. This project has been five years in the making, and I'm eager to dive in.

However, amidst the excitement, I encountered a moment that made me pause. Upon receiving the final invoice, I noticed a discrepancy in the charges compared to the delivery date. With a simple question, I brought up the issue to Mark, our manufacturing engineer. Thankfully, this inquiry led to a reevaluation of the numbers, saving us almost one thousand dollars. While intellectually I know that money matters, I couldn't shake off a feeling of discomfort.

Reflecting on this discomfort led me to reach out to my friend and business mentor, Jackie, for insight. Her response struck a chord: "Because what we have to do in business doesn’t seem true to who we are as people." As I delved deeper into this thought, I realized that my discomfort wasn't solely about money but about the societal taboo surrounding financial discussions.

Research led me to understand that this taboo has deep roots, with origins dating back to cultural perceptions of wealth and social status. At Buswell Biomedical, a scrappy startup largely self-funded, every penny counts. But why does discussing money feel "icky"?

Personally, I believe it's time to break free from such taboos. Money is an essential aspect of life, and discussing it openly shouldn't carry stigma. It's not about prioritizing money above all else but recognizing it as a fact of life, worthy of discussion like any other topic.

In a world where transparency and open communication are valued, perhaps it's time to extend this ethos to money matters. Let's dismantle the taboo and embrace discussions about salary, benefits, and financial decisions. After all, understanding and managing money is vital for personal and professional growth.

As we navigate the journey of Buswell Biomedical and beyond, let's strive for a culture where financial discussions are welcomed, not shunned. It's time to normalize talking about money and empower ourselves with knowledge and transparency.
