As we approach this long Memorial Day weekend, it's crucial to take a moment to pause and reflect on its significance. While I had intended to share my thoughts, I've decided to step back and let Roseline Salazar take the lead with a guest blog.
Personally, I'm taking this time to catch up on some much-needed rest. I've been pushing myself too hard lately, and my brain simply needed a break. It's moments like accidentally using the flashlight on my cellphone to search for my cellphone that remind me to slow down and recharge.
Reflecting on my time in the military, I realize that my reasons for joining were more practical than patriotic. Yet, my service introduced me to a diverse range of individuals, from the funniest and smartest to the most toxic. It was a profound lesson in humanity - people are people, regardless of their background or beliefs.
Unfortunately, my military journey was marked by an injury sustained during deployment. There are times when I question the significance of my injury compared to others who endure unimaginable suffering. It's uncomfortable when people thank me for my service, especially when assumptions are made about what a veteran "should" look like in 2024.
Nevertheless, I genuinely appreciate the sentiment behind those words. This weekend of rest is a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals, and I am grateful for the opportunity to recharge. If my gratitude makes anyone uncomfortable, so be it - authenticity is important to me.
